In his first meeting with Vladimir Putin since the latter retook the presidency of Russia, U.S. President Barack Obama discussed the turmoil in Syria yesterday at the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Los Cabos Mexico.

“We agreed on the need for a cessation of the violence,” Obama told reporters.

“We have found many common points on this issue,” Putin himself said, adding that the two powers will continue such talks about Syria.

Russia, which has staunchly supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and repeatedly blocked moves by the United Nations Security Council to condemn the Damascus regime, found itself in an embarrassing situation yesterday when one of its ships, reportedly carrying military equipment to Syria, was stopped by British forces off the coast of Scotland.
