Door-to-door dragnet for Boston Marathon bombing suspect [FoxNews.com]

Police were still focusing on a small section of Boston in their hunt for the second Boston Marathon bomber continued following a chaotic night of mayhem night that saw a police officer and one of the suspects killed.

An earlier lookout bulletin to a green Honda Civic, which stoked fears police believed the suspect had slipped their net, was canceled, putting the spotlight back on the city's Watertown section, where Black Hawk helicopters were patrolling the sky and police were going door-to-door hunting for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Police say he and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, placed the bombs that killed three and injured 176 at Monday's race.

Police say the sibling suspects were Chechen brothers, Muslims from Dagestan, a province in Russia that borders Chechnya. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass., is believed to be armed and extremely dangerous, and authorities were telling people in much of Boston to remain indoors.

"We have several other new leads that have just developed with the past few minutes," said Massachusetts State Police Police Superintendent Timothy Alben, speaking at a news conference early Friday afternoon. He said police had covered "60 to 70 percent" of the perimeter, inside which they believe Tsarnaev is hiding.

Police believe Tsarnaev could be armed and consider him extremely dangerous. He and his brother — in a vehicle they carjacked from a man who later escaped — led police on a chase through city streets after robbing a 7-11 in Cambridge and killing a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer, according to authorities.

The suspects threw explosives from the car and exchanged gunfire with police who were in pursuit as it headed into Watertown, according to the district attorney's news release. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was shot several times in the gunfight and pronounced dead late Thursday at an area hospital. But his younger brother escaped, and continued to elude authorities, who were going door-to-door all morning in Watertown.

"Suspect No. 1 is dead, Suspect 2 is on the run," Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said at a Friday morning press conference. "There is a massive manhunt underway."

Police also found a car believed to be registered to Tamerlan Tsarnaev in Boston, after earlier issuing a lookout bulletin to Connecticut State police. The Black Hawk choppers were flying above Watertown "to provide extra eyes," sources told The Boston Globe.

During the pursuit, a MBTA transit police officer was seriously injured and transported to the hospital, according to a news release. He was identified as Richard H. Donahue Jr., 33, and was being treated at Mt. Auburn Hospital.

Schools are closed, train and bus service is suspended and police were telling residents of neighborhoods including Cambridge, Waltham, Watertown, Newton, Arlington and Belmont to stay indoors.

The suspects apparently surfaced just hours after the FBI released their imaged late Thursday afternoon, going on a bloody rampage that claimed the life of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, 26. He was found shot to death in his squad car at 10:20 p.m. Thursday. It was not clear if he was killed before or after the convenience store was robbed, at about 10 p.m.

Moments after the shooting, the brothers carjacked a Mercedes SUV from Third Street in Cambridge and forced the driver to stop at several bank machines to withdraw money. The driver, who managed to get away, told police that the brothers had bragged to him that they were the marathon bombers, law enforcement authorities said.

“The guy was very lucky that they let him go,” Massachusetts State Police spokesman David Procopio said.

As police were working to activate the tracking device on the stolen SUV, other patrol officers spotted it in nearby Watertown, touching off the dramatic chase.

Procopio said the shooting took place about 10:30 p.m. outside an MIT building. The area was cordoned off and surrounded by responding law enforcement agencies, according to a posting on the university's website.

“The MIT Police serve all of us at the Institute with great dignity, honor and dedication,” Israel Ruiz, MIT’s executive vice president and treasurer, said in a statement. “Everyone here — those who knew Officer Collier, and those who did not — are devastated by the events that transpired on our campus last night. We will never forget the seriousness with which he took his role protecting MIT and those of us who consider it home.”

Earlier Friday, Cambridge police and the Middlesex District Attorney's office said the MIT officer was responding to a report of a disturbance when he was shot multiple times late Thursday. He later died at a hospital. His name was not immediately released.

The shooting came little more than three days after the twin bombings on the Boston Marathon that killed three people, wounded more than 180 others and led to an increase in security across the city.

Suspects described as brothers from Russian Caucasus

Deborah Feyerick and Tom Watkins, CNN
updated 2:52 PM EDT, Fri April 19, 2013

The FBI released photos and video of two men identified as Suspect No. 1, left, and Suspect No. 2 in the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon. The two men were photographed together near the finish line of the marathon before explosions that killed three people and wounded about 180. One of the suspects died and another remains on the loose after a night of violence in the Boston area.
The FBI released this photo of Dzhokar Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Friday, April 19. Police are searching for him after an overnight chase that left his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, dead, sources tell CNN. Police say the suspect at large is the man the FBI identified as "Suspect No. 2." Police say the dead suspect is the man the FBI identified as Suspect No. 1. Sources tell CNN he has been identified as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26. He was killed during a shootout with police in Watertown, Massachusetts, early April 19.
A man identified as Suspect No. 2 appeared in this photograph by bystander David Green, who took the photo after completing the Boston Marathon. Green submitted the photo to the FBI, he told Piers Morgan in an interview.
The man identified as Suspect No. 2 appears in a tighter crop of David Green's photo.
Police are searching for Suspect No. 2. Several sources tell CNN this suspect at large has been idenified as Dzhokar Tsarnaev, 19.
The FBI tweeted this photo early Friday morning and urged Watertown residents to stay indoors as they searched for the second suspect.
The FBI on Thursday, April 18, released photos and video of two men it called suspects in the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon and pleaded for public help in identifying them. The two men were photographed walking together near the finish line of the marathon before the explosions that killed three people and wounded about 180.

    HIDE CAPTION

Boston (CNN) -- By most appearances, the Tsarnaev brothers were well on their way to achieving the American dream in their adoptive country before the FBI identified them as suspects in Monday's bombings near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, studied engineering at Bunker Hill Community College just outside Boston but had taken the year off to train as a boxer, sources told CNN. In 2009, he had competed in a Golden Gloves match -- heavyweight division -- in Salt Lake City, losing in the first round.

He died at a Boston hospital overnight after a gun battle with police. A source briefed on the investigation said he was wearing explosives and an explosive trigger when his body was recovered.

Dzhokar Tsarnaev, 19, is enrolled at the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth and was the object of a massive manhunt on Friday. In 2011, he was one of 45 high school seniors awarded a $2,500 scholarship by the City of Cambridge.

His friends expressed shock about his suspected involvement in the bombings, which killed three people and wounded scores more.

"We hung out; we partied; we were good high school friends," Eric Mercado told CNN about Dzhokar, who graduated a year ahead of him from Cambridge Rindge & Latin, an ethnically diverse public high school.

"There were no telltale signs of any kind of malicious behavior from Dzhokar. It's all coming as a shock, really."

But there were hints of unhappiness. A posting on a social media website under the elder brother's name included the comment: "I don't have a single American friend. I don't understand them."

And in 2009, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, then 22, was arrested for domestic assault and battery after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, according to Cambridge Police records cited by the website spotcrime.com.

The family was from the volatile Russian Caucasus and had lived for several years in the United States.

Though the motive for the terrorist attack at the marathon is still unknown, the source briefed on the investigation added that it should not be assumed that the brothers were radicalized because of their origins.

The spokesman for Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov said the brothers had not been connected with the Chechen Republic for many years, Russia's semi-official Interfax news agency reported Friday.

"According to preliminary information, coming from the relevant agencies, the Tsarnaev family moved many years ago out of Chechnya to another Russian region," press secretary Alvi Kamirov told Interfax. "After that they lived for some time in Kazakhstan, and from there went to the U.S. where the family members received a residence permit. Therefore the individuals concerned did not live as adults in Chechnya."

Kadyrov said any blame lay at the feet of the United States. "It's all America's fault because these kids were brought up in America, not Chechnya," he said, according to Kommersant newspaper.

An official in the central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan told CNN that the brothers held Kyrgyz passports, which they had used to apply for green cards in the United States.

Many refugees from the Caucasus conflict have received passports or refugee status in surrounding countries.

A leader of the ethnic Chechen community in Kyrgyzstan told CNN that the Tsarnaev family left the republic long ago.

"There haven't been any Tsarnaevs living here in 10 or 15 years," Adnan Djubrailov said in a phone call from Kyrgyzstan.

In a statement, the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan sought to distance itself from the family.

"The Tsarnaev family lived in the town of Tokmok and 12 years ago it moved to live in the Republic of Daghestan in the Russian Federation, from where it emigrated to the USA," it said.

"Given that the suspects left the republic at the ages of 8 and 15, the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan considers it inappropriate to link them to Kyrgyzstan.

The headmaster of the school in Daghestan where Dzhokar Tsarnaev attended early grades told Reuters that the family -- which included two brothers and two sisters -- arrived in 2001 from Kyrgyzstan as refugees.

"The whole family arrived together and left together," said Emirmagomed Davydov, headmaster at School #1. "They attended the fifth and the eighth grades. The youngest (Dzhokar Tsarnaev), was admitted to the first grade, and without even finishing the first grade he along with his family left in spring, in March."

A federal official said the younger brother arrived on a tourist visa in the United States on July 1, 2002, at age 8. After seeking asylum, he was granted citizenship on September 11, 2012.

Their father has since returned to Russia.

His brother, Ruslan Tsarni, told reporters outside his home in Montgomery County, Maryland, that he had not seen the Tsarnaev family since December 2005 and last spoke with them in 2009.

Asked what might have motivated his nephews to carry out such an attack, he said: "Being losers; hatred to those who were able to settle themselves. These are the only reasons I can imagine."

Though the family is Muslim, their religion played no role in the attacks, the uncle insisted. "Anything else to do with religion, with Islam, it's a fraud, it's a fake," he said. He described the family as peace-loving, ethnic Chechens. "Somebody radicalized them, but it's not my brother, who just moved back to Russia, who spent his life bringing bread to their table, fixing cars," he said. "My family had nothing to do with that family. Of course, we're ashamed, yes, we're ashamed they're children of my brother."

Tsarni said he himself loves the United States. "This country gives chance to everybody else to be treated as a human being," he said.

About his nephews, he said, "They put that shame on the entire ethnicity."

Dzhokar Tsarnaev was acutely aware of his ethnicity, and took pains to correct his friends who misidentified him as Russian, his college classmate and friend, Giovanni, told CNN's sister network HLN.

"He used to tell us he's the only Chechnyan (sic) ... we'd ever come across," said Giovanni, who did not want his last name published. "Sometimes they'd call him Russian and he'd always correct me."

Giovanni said his friend was posting on Twitter on Wednesday -- two days after the attacks.

"He posted a Tweet of himself about a joke, like how he had like a dream about eating a cheeseburger and then he was like, 'And the next day, what did I have next?' And I responded (on Twitter) in a joking way, 'A hot dog?'

"And here I am, like, having a conversation with this guy, not knowing what he was doing or what he did."

After meeting Dzhokar Tsarnaev a year ago, the two became friends, sometimes playing video games together, but they had not seen each other since January, Giovanni said. He said his friend appeared to be stable, sending him a photograph of the woman he said he planned to marry.

"He was always just quiet, quiet in a nice (way)," Giovanni said. "You just wouldn't suspect that he'd do something so messed up."

Dzhokar Tsarnaev had worked as a lifeguard at Harvard University, said George McMasters, who hired him about two and a half years ago and said he was impressed with his work ethic. "He showed up on time, he watched the water, he rotated from position to position fine, got along well with others."

The aquatic coordinator said Tsarnaev gave no clue to a violent side. "He seemed like a very quiet, unassuming young man," he said. "It is very surprising and shocking to see the destruction that he has brought to the city."

But they lost contact when McMcasters was deployed last year to Afghanistan with the Army National Guard; when he returned last August, Tsarnaev was no longer on the staff or the schedule.

"To think that he's capable of something like this is beyond belief," Mercado said.

The younger brother was registered at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, which ordered its campus evacuated on Friday. The school is located 65 miles south of Cambridge, just west of New Bedford.

Larry Aaronson, a former teacher at Cambridge Rindge & Latin who lives near Dzhokar Tsarnaev's residence in Cambridge, said he had taken pictures of the younger boy as a high school wrestler. "There is nothing in his character, in his deportment, in his demeanor that would suggest anything remotely capable of any of these things that he is now suspected of doing," Aaronson told CNN.

"He was so grateful to be here, he was so grateful to be at the school," he said. "He was compassionate, he was caring, he was jovial."

He described the suspect, whom he last ran into in the neighborhood a few weeks ago, as "a lovely, lovely kid."

CNN's Mike Ahlers in Washington, Tricia Escobedo in Atlanta, Clare Sebastian in London and Ivan Watson in Beijing contributed to this report, which was written by Feyerick in Boston and Watkins in Atlanta.

The middle class student who married Boston bomber and had daughter with him after converting to Islam at college

By Sara Nathan and Daniel Bates In North Kingstown, Rhode Island,

EXCLUSIVE: @MailOnline on Twitter | DailyMail on Facebook

Slain Chechen terror suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was married to middle class college student Katherine Russell, 24.

The couple have a three-year-old daughter called Zahara
Tamerlan spent every weekend with Katherine's family at their suburban Rhode Island home

Convert: A woman believed to be Katherine Russell, the wife of Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev outside her family's Rhode Island home today.

Boston terror suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev has a three-year-old daughter with a middle-class college student who converted to Islam, MailOnline can reveal.

The 26-year-old Chechen – who was shot dead by cops last night – was regularly seen at Katherine Russell's family home in Rhode Island, alongside their young daughter Zahara.

And neighbours today spoke of their shock at waking up to see Katherine's home being raided by the FBI and cops before dawn this morning
While a woman fitting the 24-year-old's description was seen answering the door at the family house, athough her identity has not yet been confirmed.

A man, believed to be Katherine's father, Warren Russell, said: 'We have no comment at this time.'

When the brunette thought to be Katherine emerged from the house to meet a friend who had come to comfort her, she told MailOnline: 'No comment.'

One neighbour told how Katherine - who also uses the last name Tsarnaeva - converted to Islam shortly after starting school at Suffolk University in Boston, saying she believed the couple were married.

Speaking from the quiet suburb, the neighbour said: ‘I knew Katherine was married and she had converted to Islam.

‘She went away to college about three or four years ago and I saw her a year later and she was dressed in the Islamic style. Her hair was covered and she was wearing very baggy, flowy clothing.’

Greeting a friend: A woman believed to be Katherine Russell, the wife of Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, meets a friend outside the Russells home today.

The neighbour said: ‘I saw Katherine with a man and I assumed this was her partner. They came up most weekends and had Massachusetts licence plates on their car, so I thought they lived in Boston and came home at the weekends to see her family.

‘They were always together and had a little girl, who must be about three now.’

However, the neighbour said the last time she saw the man, matching the pictures of Tsarnaev, was a year ago, adding: ‘She moved back home and was living at home with the baby.'

Tamerlan got his American citizenship on September 11, 2012, and is believed to have spent six months of last year abroad, although it's unclear where.

‘I never saw him again, I thought maybe he’s gone away or he’s busy with school,' said the neighbour.

It was, the neighbour, admitted, nevertheless a shock when she woke early to see police cars and FBI agents outside the family’s house.

She said: ‘They were there when I woke up early, there was one state patrol car and someone who came out wearing a padded vest with FBI on it.

‘With all the activity, I put it together, but I thought this can’t be.

‘But then I thought ‘well she did make this conversion…I thought Katherine may be friends with one of the brothers, I never thought it was her husband.’

Middle class family: Katherine Russell's mother Judith, above, on the left, is a nurse, while her sister Anna, is at college.

Bomber: Tamerlan Tsarnaev arrives at the Wai Kru Mixed Martial Arts center in April 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Terror in suburbia: Bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev spent every weekend and his wife Katherine Russell's family home in Rhode Island. She converted to Islam for their marriage.

According to the website spotcrime.com, Tamerlan was arrested for domestic violence in July 2009 after assaulting his girlfriend.

Katherine, who has two younger sisters Anna and Becca, grew up in with parents Judith and Warren in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, before moving to Boston for college.

Neighbours said that Warren works as a physician, while Judith is a nurse.

Paula Gillette, 59, a mother-of-one who lives over the road from the Russells, said: 'Before Katherine went to Suffolk she wore normal clothes like jeans, t-shirts and skirts but when she came back she was wearing a white headscarf.

'I don't think her family are religious.

'I have no idea what she is going to tell her kid. How can you tell them? How can you explain it?

'Who knows if she knew anything about what he was doing? We just don't know'.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, the older brother of 19-year-old Dzhokhar, who is currently the target of a massive all-out manhunt in Boston at its suburbs, was shot dead Thursday evening in an armed confrontation at MIT.

The older of the two Chechen brothers accused in the Boston marathon bombings once dreamed of representing the US as a boxer, but over the past year, he had turned to radical Islam and got on the path of Jihad.

Officials say Tamerlan and his younger brother, Dzhokhar - refugees from the Caucasus region - were the men behind the horrific terrorist attack that took the lives of three and left 176 injured during the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Hours before his death, Tamerlan called his uncle and asked for forgiveness - revealing the news of his young family.

Alvi Tsarnaev told The (Westchester County, N.Y.) Journal News that his nephew phoned him Thursday night for the first time in about two years.

Brothers: Boston bombers Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, left, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Dzhokhar is still on the run.

The call came at 7 p.m., just a couple of hours before Tamerlan was shot dead.

"He said, 'I love you and forgive me,' " said Alvi Tsarnaev, who lives in Montgomery Village, Md.

"We were not talking for a long time because there were some problems," he said, without elaborating. "We were not happy with each other."

They spoke for about five minutes, he said. Tamerlan, who is Muslim, started out by saying, "Salam Aleikum," an Arabic greeting meaning "peace on you." He then praised his uncle for keeping up with his Muslim prayers.

They talked about family and Alvi said: "I told him I was praying to Allah, not drinking, not smoking, and he told me he was happy," he said. "He was asking, 'Did you pay your mortgage?' I told him I was trying to pay. I asked him what he was doing. He said, 'I fix cars, I got married, got a baby.

Tamerlan was an avid boxer and spent a lot of time training for competitions, according to Johannes Hirn, who posted a photo essay entitled ‘Will Box for Passport’ on his page on Photoshelter.com.

Representing New England in 2010 National Golden Gloves competition in Utah, Tamerlan Tsarnaev dreamed of being ‘selected for the US Olympic team and be [a] naturalized American.’

‘Unless his native Chechnya becomes independent, Tamerlan says he would rather compete for the United States than for Russia,’ reads the caption to one of the pictures that shows Tamerlan during his workout.

The photo essay also reveals that Tsarnaev had a half-Italian, half-Portuguese girlfriend who had converted to Islam, that he drove a Mercedes and loved the movie 'Borat.'

Lý lịch hai kẻ khủng bố

    2013-04-19

BREAKING NEWS: 'Fugitive bomber' in custody after hiding in a BOAT in Boston home's backyard where police cornered him

By Louise Boyle, James Nye, Simon Tomlinson and Jill Reilly
    PUBLISHED: 22:21 EST, 18 April 2013 | UPDATED: 19:48 EST, 19 April 2013

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, 'covered in blood and hiding in a covered boat in Watertown by homeowner who ventured out after curfew was lifted'

The boat where the suspect has been located 'is on fire'
Residents warned to stay indoors amid gunfire, flash-bang explosions and tear gas
Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, killed after explosions and machine gun fire on Thursday night
Both suspects are brothers from the Russia region near Chechnya and had lived in U.S. since 2002

A man believed to be the terrorist behind the Boston bombings is in custody after he was cornered in a boat in a Boston backyard and appears to be wounded but still alive.

The owner of the boat David Henneberry reportedly emerged from his house after the curfew in Boston was lifted, saw blood on the vessel, lifted the cover and discovered a person inside. He then fled back to his house and called police, according to CNN.

Flash-bangs were being thrown in by police who had surrounded the area to try to flush out the suspect who appeared to have been at the location for most of the day.

Police have told neighbors that the suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, is covered in blood and may have been shot in exchange of gun fire last night where his accomplice elder brother was killed.

Gunshots were heard in Watertown, Massachussetts as police vehicles with flashing lights roared towards a house on a quiet street and bomb squad were on the scene. A Bearcat, a robotic device, was being sent in to check for explosives and tear gas being used.

Police immediately reissued an alert to stay inside after earlier announcing that people could move about with caution. An ambulance was also at the scene as a helicopter flew overhead.

The joint task force of FBI and police officers appeared to be moving more carefully after making visual contact with the suspect inside the perimeter they had search for the past day.

CNN reported that a family of ten were removed from the scene and officers were seen carrying children. The home reportedly belongs to Mr Henneberry and Elizabeth Henneberry, a couple in their mid-sixties.

Dzokhar Tsarnaev 'pinned down in Watertown'

Authorities have taken three people into custody in connection with the Boston bombings in New Bedford, Massachusetts, 65 miles south of the city, the Boston Globe reports. It is unknown how they were connected to the case.

The latest updates from the joint task force came as investigators confirmed that a cache of explosives had been found on Friday. At least seven IEDs have been located, some in Watertown and some at a home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, police said.

There were fears among officials that devices had been planted at other locations after one was reportedly discovered in the Charlesgate section of the city.

Massachusetts State Police Chief Colonel Alben confirmed at a press conference at 6pm local time that the devices had been made safe.
It also appeared that police have little idea as to the whereabouts of the terror suspect after 'leads in Eastern Massachusetts were not fruitful.
Terrorists: Tamerlan Tsarnaev (right) was killed during an exchange of gunfire with police on Wednesday night. His younger brother Dzhokhar (left) is still on the run and reportedly has explosives strapped to his body

Volatile: Police conduct a door-to-door search for 19-year-old Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev after it emerged that IEDs had been found at two addresses in Watertown and Cambridge

Colonel Alben said: We remain committed to this... We will have one [a result].'

He said that tactical teams had gone door to door on Friday to check that residents were safe and conducted limited searches of homes. Tactical teams were being withdrawn but there would be extra police patrols in the area.

On Friday afternoon, police and SWAT teams were seen rushing to the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth campus where Dzhokhar is a student.
It emerged earlier that Dzhokhar, 19, posted a chilling message on Twitter eight months ago where he wrote: ‘Boston marathon isn’t a good place to smoke'.
The message was uncovered as Boston remained on lock-down 16 hours into the manhunt for the 19-year-old terror suspect after he fled the scene of a shoot-out with police where his accomplice and older brother Tamerlan, 26, was killed.
The tweet last August appeared on the micro-blogging site from user @J_Tsar - named in multiple reports as an alias for the man behind Monday’s atrocity. He also tweeted about his intent to grow a beard and how he ‘wanted out’ of American life.
The messages suggested the level of forethought and planning that the Chechen immigrants allegedly put into the devastating attack on Boston which killed three people, including at eight-year-old boy, and left 176 injured.

Unfolding drama: Following the bombing in Boston in Monday, combined law enforcement have worked tirelessly to find those behind the atrocity

Constant danger: Scores of police and SWAT team members were surrounding the Boston suburb on Friday morning

The tweets added to a picture of Dzhokhar which was emerging on Friday, as a young man who had hidden his sinister intentions beneath the facade of a party-loving but dedicated student who was captain of his high school wrestling team.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, emerged as the FBI's 'Suspect 2' on Thursday after he was seen on CCTV wearing a white baseball cap and dropping a backpack shortly before the huge blasts.

Scores of heavily-armed police swarmed a Boston suburb today as the net tightened around the 'armed and dangerous' suspect who remained at large.
It was unclear how long the manhunt would keep Bostonians trapped in their homes as hundreds of thousands obeyed the police's order to 'shelter in place', leaving the city streets eerily deserted.

During a televised press conference on Friday, superintendent of Mass. State Police Timothy Alben said officers made door-by-door searches and had covered 60-70 per cent inside their perimeter.

Today's stand-off followed a dramatic night in which two suspects killed MIT campus police officer Sean Collier, 26, and hurled explosives at police in a car chase and gun battle that left one of them dead and his brother on the loose.

It is believed that Dzhokhar ran over his brother Tamerlan who had leapt from the car during the confrontation. Around 200 rounds were exchanged during the battle.

The terrorist, dubbed 'Suspect 1' by the FBI, was Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26. He died in hospital from gunshot wounds and possible blast injuries after a fierce gun battle in Watertown, hours after the police officer was shot dead at the nearby MIT campus.
It was revealed today Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev are legal immigrants who have been in the U.S., for around a decade. They come from the Russian region of Chechnya which has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars.
The entire city of Boston is on lock down with residents warned to stay indoors, public transport shut down, taxi service suspended and a no-fly zone above the city. Amtrak has suspended routes between Providence, Rhode Island and New York.

The Boston Red Sox had canceled their Friday night game along with the Boston Bruins.
Fast-moving investigation: Since pictures of the two suspects were released at 5pm on Thursday, events have rapidly unfolded in the manhunt for the terrorists

The drama unfolded around six hours after the FBI released clear images of two men named as suspects in the Boston blast which killed two young women and an eight-year-old boy and injured 176 during the city's annual marathon on Monday.

Just before 11pm on Thursday, the suspects approached Officer Collier from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and shot him in the head.
The two then stole a Honda CRV, robbed a nearby 7-Eleven, carjacked a Mercedes SUV and briefly kidnapped the driver before letting him go, the sources said. One brother drove away in the CRV, and the other drove away in the Mercedes.
One then ditched the CRV and reunited with his brother in the Mercedes, where they then withdrew $800 from the ATM with the carjacking victim's card.
Authorities say both suspects were in the Mercedes when they encountered police and hurled explosives at officers. Police officer Richard Donohue, 33, was seriously wounded in an exchange of gun fire.
Tamerlan reportedly had an improvised explosive device strapped to his chest when he was killed. Dzhokhar escaped by driving through a line of police officers at the end of the street. The stolen vehicle has now been recovered by investigators.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev posted online he will 'kill everyone because we killed his brother', according to a dispatcher in Watertown.
Explosions were heard at a Boston home this morning as police continue to hunt for a marathon bombing suspect and another possible accomplice.
Two people, one believed to be the mother of the men, have been taken into custody at the home in Cambridge where the brothers grew up but are not considered suspects. The home is surrounded by FBI and the bomb squad is on the scene.
Dzhokhar was born in Kyrgyzstan, according to NBC. His brother Tamerlan was reportedly born in Russia. The brothers are believed to have moved to America with their family in 2002 or 2003.

The 19-year-old, who attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, is an amateur wrestling champion who holds a Massachusetts driving license. He is a registered student at University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth. The campus was ordered closed on Friday morning.

The older brother Tamerlan attended Bunker Hill Community College and was studying to become an engineer but took a year off to pursue boxing.

He traveled to Russia for six months last year. He said in an interview with a Boston University student magazine in 2010: 'I don't have a single American friend. I don't understand them.'

[h=4]More...[/h]Tamerlan was once arrested for domestic assault on a girlfriend, ABC reported. In the hours since the Tsarnaevs have been identified as the prime suspects in the bombings, a picture has begun to emerge of the older brother as a man who felt like an outsider in the U.S. and had recently become radicalized.
The 26-year-old had a profile on YouTube channel since August 2012. Five months ago, Tamerlan created a playlist dedicated to terrorism.
Named simply ‘Terrorists,’ the playlist included a pair of videos, which are now no longer available. Although most of the clips in the channel are ordinary music videos, Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s YouTube channel shows signs that he had been drawn to radical Islamism.
Among the songs on his playlists was one called ‘I will dedicate my life to Jihad.' He also featured videos recorded by recent converts to Islam.

A friend of the brothers told CNN that he had known them since 2006 and they were 'normal kids' who partied and occasionally smoked. A classmate told CBS that Dzhokhar did not have an accent and that he assumed he had always lived in the U.S.
The uncle of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev urged his nephew to turn himself in. Ruslan Tsarni of Montgomery Village in Maryland, said that the 19-year-old should give himself up and ask for forgiveness.
The father of the suspects said that his son Dzhokhar is a smart and accomplished young man. Anzor Tsarnaev spoke by telephone from the Russian city of Makhachkala on Friday.
Anzor Tsarnaev said: 'My son is a true angel. Dzhokhar is a second-year medical student in the U.S. He is such an intelligent boy. We expected him to come on holidays here.'
The father said that his sons had been framed for the bombing in Boston.

A sister of the Boston bombing suspects is 'heartbroken and devastated' after meeting with police and FBI over her brothers' involvement in the atrocious attack, it was revealed today. Police officers of West New York, New Jersey and FBI descended on the home of the woman who is believed to be Ailina Tsarnaev just after 11am on Friday.

Federal agents were seen removing cell phones and computers from her quiet suburban home in West New York in New Jersey. Two police trucks are being sent to her home after it was feared that Dzhokhar might try to reach her.
However police did not expect the 19-year-old suspect to arrive. Police director Michael Indri told reporters she is a young mother with a baby girl and that she had not spoken to either brother 'in years'.
The director went on to describe the siblings as 'estranged'. The reason for the falling out is unclear. Indri said to the best of his knowledge there has been no attempt by Dzhokhar to contact his sister but the FBI said it is a possibility.
The FBI are no longer at the property but her front door is being guarded by two police officers.

Director Indri was unaware how the young woman discovered that her brothers were the most wanted men in America but said that she ‘was co-operating fully’.

'A second suspect was able to flee from that car and there is an active search going on at this point in time,' Colonel Timothy Alben, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, told a news conference.
'What we are looking for right now is a suspect consistent with suspect No 2, the white-capped individual who was involved in Monday's bombing of the Boston Marathon,' Alben said.

Police say the two suspects discharged several explosives at police from the vehicle during the pursuit.

Andrew Kitzenburg spoke to the New York Times about the view he had from his third floor window as he saw two men in jackets shooting at at least 10 police from behind a black Mercedes SUV.
The gun battle was being waged 70 yards apart and Mr. Kitzenburg said that the two men and police were engaged in 'constant gunfire'.
Suddenly a police SUV 'drove towards the shooters' and was fired upon until it was damaged and rolled to the side of the road, crashing into two cars in his driveway.
Dramatically, Mr. Kitzenburg said the two gunmen then threw a large bomb, 'They lit it, still in the middle of the gunfire, and threw it. But it went 20 yards at most.
The unknown device did explode and at that point, one of the men ran towards the gathered police officers and was tackled - it is not clear from Mr. Kitzenburg if he was shot or not.
Then suddenly, the other man returned to his SUV and drove towards police officers and 'put pedal to the metal'.
The car 'went right through the cops, broke right through and continued west.'

Mr Kitzenburg said that the two men had left backpacks by the car and that a police bomb robot was currently dealing with the devices.
Police have told all residents to remain in their homes while they clear the area.
Police screamed at reporters on the scene to turn off phones 'if they want to live' as they hunted for the suspects - fearful that improvised explosives could be remotely detonated.
The shoot-out came hours after the FBI released images and video of the Boston bombing suspects as they launched a hunt for two 'armed and extremely dangerous' men.
The images show them walking in single file toward the finishing line of the race around 13 minutes before the twin detonations.
Hours after the initial photos were made public, investigators released close-up shots this morning of the two suspects that more clearly show the men's faces.
Suspect Number One was wearing a black baseball hat, a dark hooded jacket and khaki pants.

Suspect Number Two was wearing a white basketball cap on backwards and a dark hooded sweatshirt.
The FBI made no mention of the men's height, weight or age range and would not discuss the men's ethnicity.
'It would be inappropriate to comment on the ethnicity of the men because it could lead people down the wrong path potentially,' said FBI agent Greg Comcowich, a spokesman for the Boston FBI office.
The information on the first suspect was developed within a day or so before its release, DesLauriers said.

Agent Daniel Curtin said the FBI did not issue the photos earlier because authorities wanted to be meticulous: 'It's important to get it right.'
And according to FBI sources who have spoken to CNN, still unreleased footage reveals that the suspects stayed at the scene to watch the devastation the two blasts created.
'When the bombs blow up, when most people are running away and victims were lying on the ground, the two suspects walk away pretty casually,' said the official to CNN, who has seen the unreleased video.
'They acted differently than everyone else,' he added.

Massachusetts State Police spokesperson Dave Procopio said that they believe multiple possible explosive devices were used against police tonight during this incident at Watertown
Witnesses reported hearing explosions and gunfire as the police apparently engaged the two men and local television footage showed one man lying spread out on the ground, with his arms out, surrounded by police.
However, it is now thought that this man is not one of the suspects wanted by law enforcement.
Police officials would not discuss the incident with reporters.
When asked for information on the incident, Boston police spokeswoman Neva Coakley frantically told MailOnline, 'I don't know anything... I don't know anything at this point.'
An officer at the Waterdown police department responded similarly to questions about the incident, saying only, 'They are out in the street, that's all I know,' before hanging up the phone.

Stand-off: A police officer trains his weapon as chaos descends on Boston after multiple shots and explosions were heard in the suburb of Watertown

As the battle raged, police urged everyone to stay inside of their homes. The area is still considered extremely dangerous.
Massachusetts state police spokesman Frank Schifone told MailOnline that only one suspect is accounted for and he’s in the hospital.
Asked whether there is any tie between tonight’s incidents and the marathon bombings, he said, ‘At this time we don’t know. It’s all unfolding.’
Initial reports suggest that one suspect is in custody and a police officer has been injured.
Earlier, Cambridge police and the Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed an officer was shot dead responding to a report of a disturbance when he was fired upon multiple times.
He later died at a hospital. His name was not immediately released.
State police spokesman Dave Procopio says the shooting took place about 10:30 p.m. outside an MIT building.
Procopio says authorities are searching for a suspect or suspects. No arrests have been made.
MIT police, Cambridge police and state police are involved in the investigation.
About 11,000 people attend the prestigious school.

'At 10:48 PM today gunshots were reported near Building 32 (Stata) which is currently surrounded by responding agencies.
'The area is cordoned off. Please stay clear of area until further notice. Unknown if injuries have occurred.. Although the situation is considered active and extremely dangerous, an investigation is underway.
'Updates will be provided at this site when more information becomes available.'
The injured officer was from MIT Police and was being taken to Mass. General Hospital where he is currently in a critical condition.
The campus newspaper 'The Tech' posted to Twitter, 'Shots fired near 32 Vassar St (Stata Center), police officer down. Please stay inside.'
Massachusetts State Police initially said the officer has suffered ‘life-threatening injuries.’ He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Clearer shot: David Green, 49, captured this picture with his iPhone likely of the man identified by the FBI as Suspect Number Two, as Green faced east on the corner of Fairfield and Boylston Streets, shortly after the Boston Marathon blasts

Comparison: Suspect Number Two is seen in surveillance footage from the FBI released on Thursday (left). The man closely resembling that suspect is seen (right) in a clearer image released by a man who had competed in the Boston Marathon and captured the picture as he ran toward the site of the blast

Earlier on Thursday, FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers spoke at a press conference to release photos of two men identified as 'suspect one' and 'suspect two' from surveillance footage near the blast site.

Suspect one is dressed in dark clothes, a baseball cap and wearing sunglasses, while suspect two is clearly wearing a white baseball cap on backwards - both are seen in the images with back packs on.
Originally, Mr Green thought that his photograph also included the man referred to as Suspect Number One, who was wearing a black baseball hat, a dark hooded jacket and khaki pants.

Though there is a man wearing khaki pants in Mr Green's picture, who is seen next to a woman in a pink jacket, the man in his picture is wearing a red jacket and is not believed to be the suspect being hunted down by the FBI.

Boston bombing suspects, Tsarnaev brothers, caught on video

The District Attorney's office in Boston later confirmed the officer had passed away. The school is describing the situation as 'active and extremely dangerous.' - and FBI agents have been witnessed at the scene.
Boston has been on edge after two bombs ripped through the crowd near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injured 183 more.
The image taken by Florida businessman David Green emerged just hours after the FBI lodged an appeal to identify two suspects behind the attacks that killed three and injured over 180.
His picture shows runners and spectators fleeing in panic around the suspect, closely resembling the man identified by officials as Suspect Number Two, who is wearing a white basketball cap and a dark hooded sweatshirt.
Mr Green has spoken to the FBI and told the New York Timesand CNN's Piers Morgan that agents believe the man is Suspect Number Two.

Earlier on Thursday, the FBI launched a hunt for two 'armed and extremely dangerous' men now considered suspects in Monday's deadly Boston bombings - as it was revealed they stayed to watch the carnage unleashed by the twin blasts.
The earlier images, released by the FBI, show the as-yet unidentified men walking in single file toward the finishing line of the race eastward along Boylston Street at 2:37pm, approximately 13 minutes before the twin detonations which came 12 seconds apart.

Hours after the initial photos were made public, investigators released closeup shots on Friday morning of the two suspects that more clearly show the men's faces.

This combination of Associated Press file images released by the FBI on Thursday show two images taken from surveillance video of what the FBI are calling suspect number 1, (left), in black cap,and suspect number 2, (right), in a white cap

Mr Green captured the astonishingly clear photo with his iPhone at 2:50pm on Monday, as he ran toward the site of the first blast.

The married 49-year-old, who is the CEO of an athletic apparel company, had competed in the marathon and finished the race at around 1:40pm.

It was the first time he had competed in the race.
He was in search of friends who were cheering for him in the crowd when the blasts occurred, he told CNN's Piers Morgan on Thursday night.

As he ran toward the scene of the blast, he captured just one picture with remarkable clarity.

After the explosions, Mr Green posted the photo to his Facebook page and also contacted the FBI on Monday, alerting them to the scene he had captured on his smartphone.

On Thursday, after officials released the photos of the main suspects in the Boston bombings, one of Mr Green's friends contacted him and noted the resemblance to the man in Green's photograph and the picture of Suspect Number Two released by the FBI.
'I have spoken to several agents,' Mr Green, who is from Jacksonville Beach, Fla. told the New York Times.
'They have got the photos, they are picking up material from me, and I don’t think there's any doubt,' he said.

During his interview with CNN, Mr Morgan also probed about the authenticity of the photo.
FBI officials 'told me it looks like a good picture,' he said.

After Mr Green's photograph was published, a federal investigator in Boston told the MailOnline that officials would not comment on the credibility of photographs other than the earlier pictures released by the FBI.
The Florida resident told Piers Morgan that he is still numb from his experience in New England earlier this week.

'I was incapable of helping anybody. It was well beyond anything I had seen or knew how to deal with,' he said.

'It all happened very fast, there was a lot of screaming and a lot of noise.'
As he sorts through the emotional impact of the experience he said it brings him some relief knowing that a simple photograph could possibly help investigators locate the perpetrators of the horrific attack.

'I hope if it helps solve this case, [it could] in a way redeem what I couldn't do at the site,' he told the CNN host.

In the photo taken by Mr Green, the man who appears to be Suspect Number Two is not wearing a backpack in the aftermath of the blast. He noted that a closeup of the photograph shows how the side of the suspect's hat has a number 3 emblazoned on the side.

Previously, commentators had speculated it appeared that the number on the hat could have been a 7.
Agent DesLauriers confirmed there are images of suspect two placing a backpack on the floor at the site of the second explosion 'within minutes' of the blast - but the FBI declined to show this sequence as specific details about it may be important for future questioning.
Making a direct appeal to the public, agent DesLauriers asked for any information, however insignificant that could lead to them identifying and eventually speaking to these individuals who are wanted in connection with the terror attack which killed three and injured over 180 people.

DesLauriers said investigators were particularly interested in interviewing witnesses who were in front of the Forum restaurant, site of the second blast.
He also cautioned the public not to approach the two men, even if they think they identify them.
'We consider them to be armed and extremely dangerous, No one should approach them, do not apprehend them,' said DesLauriers.
'Do not take any action on your own. If you see these men, contact law enforcement.'
The bombings that killed three people and wounded over 180 began a week of security scares that rattled the United States and evoked memories of the September 11, 2001 hijacked plane attacks.

Did the suspects stay to watch what they had done:
Both men carried backpacks that were believed to contain the bombs. The man identified as suspect number one wore a dark baseball cap. suspect number two wore a white cap backwards and was seen setting down his backpack on the ground, agent DesLauriers said.

According to FBI sources who have spoken to CNN, still unreleased footage reveals that the suspects stayed at the scene to watch the devastation the two blasts created.

'When the bombs blow up, when most people are running away and victims were lying on the ground, the two suspects walk away pretty casually,' said the official to CNN, who has seen the unreleased video.

'They acted differently than everyone else,' he added.
What is the Significance of what the Two Men were Wearing - Internet pours over their attire
Internet users immediately began scrutinizing the mens' clothing and backpacks on Reddit, and within minutes, one user had identified the cap on one of the suspects as a Bridgestone Golf hat, available at Walmart.com for $14.99.

The black hat has distinct white markings and a logo above the brim that looks identical to the Bridgestone hat.

The hat on the second suspect has proven more difficult to identify.

The suspect wore the white cap backwards in the images and the logo on the front is only visible for a split second on a grainy video.

There appears to be a number - possible a '7' - on the side of the hat.

Some on Reddit suggested that it could be a Polo Ralph Lauren Hat - the markings are similar to one that's available online for around $30 - but that hat only comes with the number '3' on the side.

'Today we are enlisting the public's help to identify the two suspects,' Richard DesLauriers, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation's special agent in charge in Boston, told a news conference.

'Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers or family members of the suspects. Though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us,' said DesLauriers while cautioning that they were considered armed and dangerous.

Investigators hoped the men would be identifiable within hours of the release of the pictures and video, a national security official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Law enforcement were looking at the men for some period of time before deciding to make the videos public, and they had extensive video and still pictures to justify the FBI decision to label the two men as suspects, the official said.
This image released by the FBI on Thursday, April 18, 2013, shows in a image from video what the FBI are calling 'Suspect Number One', front left, in black cap, and 'Suspect Number 2, in white cap, (back right)

Mingling with the thousands of spectators: How the two men made their way through the crowd raising no suspicion.
Investigators were looking at the men for some period of time before deciding to make the videos public, and they had extensive video and still pictures to justify the FBI decision to label the two men as suspects one official said.

But through intensive viewings, the FBI concluded that the two men were associated with each - as they strolled calmly through the crowd.

The two men are seen walking together in an eastwardly direction at the intersection of Boylston and Gloucester Streets within proximity of the finish line at 14.37 - exactly 13-minutes before the twin blasts at the marathon.

Suspect one, dressed in a black baseball cap and khaki-colored trousers is around five paces ahead of suspect two, who is wearing a white baseball cap backwards, with a grey hoody underneath a black coat black pants.

In grabs taken from video, the two suspects, who appear to be in the early to mid-twenties, do not talk to each other, but move in the same direction with backpacks hanging off their shoulders.

The footage shows suspect two place down his backpack at the scene of the second explosion just in front of the Forum restaraunt and then move back down Boylston Street in a westward direction.

Suspect one is seen moving through the marathon crowd toward the finish line and scene of the first blast - without suspect two who has disappeared from police view.

Video of suspect two planting his device exists, but the FBI has chosen not to release it because were the media to repeatedly show the suspects leaving the bomb, it might cause some people to overreact if they came into contact with them.
In the new images released by the FBI - the as yet-unidentified men known as suspect one and suspect two - are first seen walking in single file along Boylston Street after turning at the intersection of Gloucester. Suspect number two wearing a white hat was seen setting down a backpack at the site of the second explosion at the Forum restaurant

Was a timer used or were the blasts triggered using a cell phone?
In the hours since the photographs were released, speculation has centered on one of the images which reportedly shows suspect two with a cell phone to his ear.

ABC News quoted authorities as saying that they believe a mobile phone device was used to trigger one of the Boston marathon explosions.

A senior law enforcement official said that a 'Massive effort was underway to capture every cell phone call in that local area at the time of the bombings.

And that 'Attempting to trace the call back to the bomber is a time consuming process, but a top top priority.'

However, a law enforcement source told CNN that despite a belief that the bombs were detonated by remote control, the bombs were probably detonated by timers.

However, The FBI has said details of the detonating system are still unknown.

How the Boston bombing victim in iconic photo helped identify attackers
Jeff Bauman, whose legs were blown away in the first explosion, told investigators that he stared right into the eyes of the man who tried to kill him.

Bauman lost both his legs below the kneww in the blast and a picture of him in a wheelchair, pale and bloodied was broadcast around the world.

But just before 2.50 p.m. on Monday, Bauman was waiting in the crowd for his girlfriend to cross the finish line when a man wearing a cap, sunglasses and a black jacket over a hooded sweatshirt looked at Jeff, 27, and dropped a bag at his feet.

Two and a half minutes later the bag exploded - destroying Jeff's legs - but Jeff had seen a man who matched suspect one's description.

'He woke up under so much drugs, asked for a paper and pen and wrote, ‘bag, saw the guy, looked right at me,’ Chris Bauman said yesterday in an interview given to Bloomberg.

However, despite his severely medicated state, Jeff managed to give an interview and description to the FBI - which helped them narrow down the man they were looking for.

At least one other person of interest who featured in crime scene pictures had been ruled out as a suspect. Also ruled out earlier in the week was a Saudi student who was injured in the attacks, the official said.
The images were released hours after President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama attended an interfaith service at a Roman Catholic cathedral in Boston to remember the three people killed and more than 180 wounded in the twin blasts Monday at the marathon finish line.

The break in the investigation came just days after the attack that tore off limbs, shattered windows and raised the specter of another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. FBI photo-analysis specialists have been analyzing a mountain of surveillance footage and amateur pictures and video for clues to who carried out the attack and why.

Generally, law enforcement agencies release photos of suspects only as a last resort, when they need the public's help in identifying or capturing someone.
Releasing photos can be a mixed bag: It can tip off a suspect and deny police the element of surprise. It can also trigger an avalanche of tips, forcing police to waste valuable time chasing them down.
Within moments of the announcement, the FBI website crashed, perhaps because of a crush of visitors.
In the images, both men appear to be wearing dark jackets. Suspect 1 appears to be wearing a backpack. The planting of the backpack is not depicted in the video footage that was made public.
At the Cathedral of the Holy Cross earlier in the day, Obama declared to the people of Boston: 'Your resolve is the greatest rebuke to whoever committed this heinous act.' He spoke in almost mocking terms of those who commit such violence.
'We finish the race, and we do that because of who we are,' the president said to applause. 'And that's what the perpetrators of such senseless violence - these small, stunted individuals who would destroy instead of build and think somehow that makes them important - that's what they don't understand.'
'We will find you,' he warned those behind the attack.
Seven victims remained in critical condition. Killed were 8-year-old Martin Richard of Boston, 29-year-old restaurant manager Krystle Campbell of Medford, Mass., and Lu Lingzi, a 23-year-old Boston University graduate student from China.

Video and photos recovered in the investigation are being examined and enhanced by an FBI unit called the Operational Technologies Division, said Joe DiZinno, former director of the FBI lab in Quantico, Va.
Investigators are looking at video frame by frame - a laborious process, though one aided by far more sophisticated facial recognition technology than is commercially available, forensic specialists said.
'When you have something that is this high-profile, they are going to use every available resource that they have,' said former Miami federal prosecutor Melissa Damian Visconti.
The investigation will probably collect about a million hours of videotape from fixed security cameras and cellphones and cameras used by spectators, said Gene Grindstaff, a scientist at Intergraph Corp., a Huntsville, Ala., company that makes video analysis software used by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.
But after years of investigating terrorist incidents and other crimes, the FBI is practiced at cataloging, categorizing and analyzing such evidence and will winnow it down dramatically, he said.
'Back in the days of 20 years ago, you were lucky if you had video and it was probably of poor quality and it took a tremendous amount of enhancement. Today you have a completely different issue,' Grindstaff said.

Injured people and debris lie on the sidewalk near the Boston Marathon finish line following an explosion in Boston, Monday, April 15, 2013
Investigators can set the video analysis software so that it automatically searches for certain types of objects or people matching a height and weight description. The software can also spot patterns that analysts might not notice, such as a certain car that turns up in different places, Grindstaff said.
DiZinno, who ran the FBI lab from 2007 to 2010, said any retrieved bomb components such as the pressure cookers, shrapnel and pieces of timers or wire will be closely examined for fingerprints, DNA, hairs and fibers.
The bomb components would be traced by figuring out the item's maker, where each piece is typically purchased and whether the device resembles any bombs the FBI has seen in past attacks. The FBI lab keeps a detailed file on past bombings, including many overseas attacks.
'Let's say there was a timer,' DiZinno said. 'Was there a serial number? Who was the manufacturer? That can provide leads for investigators.'
The press conference held at 5pm on Thursday was the first time in over 24 hours that federal officials released any information about the case.

Minutes before the long-awaited briefing, the local Boston FOX affiliate released a picture of a person that they believe is the possible second bomber.
The station said that they confirmed the photo was confirmed by the FBI.

Earlier on Thursday, high school student Salah Barhoum denied being involved in the bombing after much speculation about images of the 17-year-old track star standing next to his reported coach, who was wearing a white baseball cap.
Barhoum spoke to MailOnline, saying that as soon as he saw his picture circulating online, he went to speak to police on his own accord and was cleared of any charges relating to the fatal bombing that killed three people and injured more than 180 others.
Since late Wednesday night, no further clarification was announced about the on-going investigation in spite of multiple reports that police had clear images of two potential suspects.
There was no reason given for their reticence in handing the picture out to media outlets throughout the day on Thursday.
According to CBS News senior correspondent John Miller the big debate right now among law enforcement is whether to release the images of the men to the public.
'It's been a tough call,' said Miller. 'For investigators, there's always a difficult choice because if the person doesn't know you're looking for him, he may stay in place, you may catch up to him,' said Miller.
'If he does know you're looking for him, he may run. On the other hand, if you don't get him, it's always great to enlist 20 million or so more eyes in the public who may be able to give you a location right away.
'That's not going to happen tonight anymore. It was going to happen earlier- they've rethought that. It may happen with the release of that picture tomorrow. They're reassessing.'
At this point, investigators have been sifting through masses of images, gathered by either civilian fan footage and multiple surveillance cameras in the area.
Anyone with any information regarding the two suspects is urged to call the FBI on 1800 222 5324

Re: BREAKING NEWS: 'Fugitive bomber' in custody after hiding in a BOAT in Boston home's backyard where police cornered him

Uncle: Mentors 'radicalized' older Boston bombing suspect

    Scott Stump TODAY

The uncle of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects told TODAY Saturday that he believes Dzhokar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were pawns in a deadly scheme.

"I strongly believe they were just puppets and executors of something of bigger scale," Ruslan Tsarni told Savannah Guthrie.

He said Dzhokar, the younger of the brothers, was "used by his older brother. He’s just another victim of his older brother. He victimized others, but he’s been used by his older brother."

Tsarni, a Maryland resident who is the brother of the suspects’ father, believes Tamerlan, 26, who died in a confrontation with police early Friday morning, was radicalized by others. He noted that the suspects were in his house as children, and recalled a surprising transformation the last time he saw Tamerlan in 2009.

“There certainly were mentors,’’ Tsarni said. “I was shocked when I heard his words, his phrases, when every other word he starts sticking in words of God. I question what he’s doing for work, (and) he claimed he would just put everything in the will of God. It was a big concern to me. He called me 'confused' when I started explaining to him, make yourself useful to yourself and to your family and maybe you’ll have extra to share with everybody else.

"It wasn’t devotion, it was something, as it’s called, being radicalized. Not understanding what he is talking (about). He is just using words for the sake of the words and not understanding the meaning of it.’’

The suspects' parents told NBC News they believe their sons were framed. Tsarni said a family acquaintance told him there was an outside influence on Tamerlan.

“He said there is someone who brainwashed him, some new convert to Islam,’’ Tsarni said. “I would like to stress (the acquaintance was) of Armenian descent.’’

The suspects’ uncle believes the radicalization occurred in the United States, not overseas. Tamerlan Tsarnaev traveled to Russia last year.

“It has nothing to do with Russia, (or) with Chechnya, which he had nothing to do with,’’ Tsarni said. “It started here.”

Tsarni said he was "angry" on Friday when he told reporters outside his home the brothers were "losers." On Saturday, he told Guthrie he was grateful that Dzhokar was captured alive after the manhunt that concluded Friday night in Watertown, Mass. Tsarni also expressed his condolences to the families of the three people killed in the marathon bombing and the college police officer who was allegedly shot and killed in his cruiser by the suspects on Thursday night.

Dzhokar was found wounded inside a boat in the backyard of a house and captured after a gun battle.

“I was relieved that he is alive,’’ Tsarni said. “At least he has a chance to ask for forgiveness for those that he victimized, as well as there is a chance now for enforcement agencies to get to the bottom of it.

"For a 19-year-old kid, I do not even believe (that) he would (have) been in full comprehension of what he’s been doing. For the sake of seeking forgiveness for himself, I don’t know how long his life is going to be, but I know it will be way easier for him if he receives that forgiveness for those he made to suffer.''

Boston bomber arrested: Tamerlan Tsarnaev was questioned by FBI in 2011

Philip Sherwell, and Nick Allen in Boston and Patrick Sawer
    7:04PM BST 20 Apr 2013

One of the two brothers accused of the Boston Marathon bombing was questioned by the FBI two years ago but dismissed as being no threat, it was disclosed on Saturday.

The FBI's contact with Tamerlan was described as 'a sit-down interview where they asked him questions about contacts and surroundings' Photo: Julia Malakie/Lowell Sun

As the hunt for the bombers culminated in a dramatic shoot-out, it emerged that Tamerlan Tsarnaev had been interviewed by US officials in 2011 because the Russian government was concerned over his ties to “radical Islam”.

There were fears that Tamerlan, who was killed while trying to flee police on Friday evening, was ready to travel to the Caucasus to join “underground groups”. However, the 26-year-old was released after the FBI assessed he had no connection to terrorist activity.

The disclosure came just hours after the manhunt for Tamerlan’s younger brother Dzhokhar, one of the biggest in US history, had culminated in a suburban back garden.

    http://player.ooyala.com/player.js?w...36ir5h_-ZZvIp6

The 19-year-old was found cowering in a boat by a Boston resident who had wandered outside to stretch his legs and noticed a trail of blood. Police quickly surrounded the property and Dzhokhar was arrested after a gunfight in which 30 shots were fired.

The FBI was facing urgent questions last night over the extent of its knowledge of the two brothers, immigrants from the Caucuses. Their mother and father both claimed yesterday that US federal agents had kept the brothers under watch for at least three years. Zubeidat Tsarnaeva said FBI agents had told her they feared her son Tamerlan was an “extremist leader”.

The FBI confirmed yesterday it had interviewed Tamerlan in 2011, at the request of an unidentified foreign government — later reported to be Russia — over suspected ties to an extremist group.

The questioning did not produce any “derogatory” information and the matter was put “to bed,” a US law enforcement source said.

The FBI’s contact with Tamerlan was described as “a sit-down interview where they asked him questions about contacts and surroundings”.

They are also likely to have conducted a standard background check on him, running his name through databases, checking on his communications and any overseas travel.

The FBI said in a statement: “The request stated that it was based on information that he was a follower of radical Islam and a strong believer, and that he had changed drastically since 2010 as he prepared to leave the United States for travel to the country’s region to join unspecified underground groups.”

The matter was not pursued further, however, because interviews with Tamerlan and family members “did not find any terrorism activity, domestic or foreign”.

Michael McCaul, the Republican chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said: “It’s new information to me and it’s very disturbing that he’s on the FBI radar screen.”

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva said: “They [the FBI] used to come [to our] home, they used to talk to me. They were telling me that he [Tamerlan] was really an extremist leader and that they were afraid of him. They told me whatever information he is getting, he gets from these extremist sites.
