Garden Grove Mayor Bao Nguyen showed leadership by refusing to sign a letter critical of Riverside’s sister city friendship with a Vietnamese city, Riverside Mayor William “Rusty” Bailey said Thursday, Feb. 12.
Garden Grove’s City Council voted Tuesday to send a letter asking Riverside to rescind its friendship with Can Tho. The relationship recently sparked protests, largely driven by Orange County’s Vietnamese American community.
Nguyen declined to sign the letter, saying Wednesday he doesn’t think it’s appropriate to tell another city what to do and that he’s trying to represent his whole city rather than a specific voting bloc.
“I appreciate the mayor looking at the bigger picture and respecting the democratic process here in Riverside,” Bailey said.
Westminster’s City Council voted in January to call on Riverside to cut sister city ties with Can Tho, but Riverside officials show no signs of reversing course.
