You know... like in case if there are your “Ba Tàu” friends or relatives standing near by or literally in front of you.. Or would you like to know what some of your "Ba Tàu" friends and relatives may respond to a Chinaman if he happens to generalize something negative about the Vietnamese people??
As for you, Cô Hương, just solely based on this specific incidence, you and I are obviously very, very different when it comes to making friends. Personally, I can't possibly be friends with someone who harbors such a mentality, and I don’t see how that can be acceptable with such an ill intention continue to promote in our community. As an adult and a parent, to allow and accept such irrational hatred continues is to wish it upon my own children and family. I would never allow myself to be a part of such mental illness.
Yup! I feel you, man.
Maybe it's just their habit of expressing themselves that way [assuming, generalizing, without considering the whole "Context" (Big Picture)...], that makes it sounds shallow and discriminatory... not to mention Hurtful to those they addressed [as you clearly pointed out above].
For the most part, I think we Viets don't like the Attitude/Ambition of the Great China [Đại Hán], who always consider South Asia their back yard [meaning Vietnam is, or was to be exact, part of the Chinese Nation].
I have no problems with Chinese people. Some of my "real" friends were Chinese. One of my "True Love" was Chinese [@ Cholon]; my BIL is Chinese; my next-door neighbor are also Vietnamese-Chinese [as a matter of fact, I just heard them listening to Vietnamese music yesterday, as you might sometimes also do]... Some of the people I respect [some turned out to be "truer friends" than I expected] are Chinese (Cholonese)...
I think they are/were expressing their displeasure/hatred against... the Chinese GOVERNMENT more than mere Chinese...
In any case, I'd like to apologize to you and all other Chinese who were offended [for the "careless" insulting slogan/remarks that you often head over the years regarding our "Patriotic" Anti-China Rants--which I myself might be guilty of promoting].
